Nigeria’s opposition is uniting around the African Democratic Congress ahead of the January 2027 elections.

Analysts and polls suggest support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu is weakening.

The decline is most visible in northern states, which gave him over 60% of his 2023 margin

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the ADC said internal polling shows the president may struggle to match his 2023 results in northern Nigeria.

Speaking on national TV, he warned of a “political tsunami” in the region.

He linked this to economic hardship, insecurity, and a growing rift with the Aso Rock administration..

The political tensions are unfolding against a security backdrop that continues to deteriorateIn recent weeks, a brigadier general was killed in Borno State in a suspected attack.

Communities in Plateau State, Nasarawa State, and Kebbi State have also faced new violence.

Opposition figures, including Peter Obi, say insecurity is still rising. They note this continues despite presidential visits to affected areas.

Within the APC itself, succession battles are creating quiet turbulence. President Tinubu’s visit to Lagos, his political home base, was notably marked by his absence from several commissioning ceremonies, fueling speculation about internal disagreements over who will succeed incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The question of Lagos’s next governor is widely viewed as a defining test of Tinubu’s kingmaker influence heading into 2027.

Pro-Tinubu group SWAGA 2.0 has publicly launched a re-election mobilization drive, citing foreign reserve growth to $46 billion, naira stabilization, and oil sector recovery as the administration’s headline achievements. Supporters argue that Tinubu’s economic reforms have pulled Nigeria from the brink of bankruptcy.

With campaigning intensifying and economic pressures mounting, the next six months will likely determine whether Tinubu can rebuild northern support or faces a competitive election that breaks the pattern of incumbent dominance in Nigerian presidential politics.
